Green Gift

The Deception Gift — deliberately misidentified as the Transmutation Gift, hidden by Thorn beneath Aegea, and ultimately used in the final ascensions of Thorn and Orin-Kel.

Overview

The Green Gift was one of the four Gifts Demmazon deliberately weakened relative to the White Gift.

Its profile was Deception, expressed through the two schools of Enchantment and Illusion.

Its original bearer during the Korvak War was the dwarf Thorn Runehammer.

The true nature of the Green Gift was deliberately concealed. The world was encouraged to believe that Green was the Transmutation Gift.

This deception had a second consequence: because Transmutation was publicly attributed to Green, historical accounts generally described the Blue Gift as Conjuration alone.

The actual structure was:

  • Blue: Conjuration + Transmutation
  • Green: Enchantment + Illusion

The Green Gift therefore embodies Deception both in its magical profile and in the false history surrounding its nature.

See The Five Gifts for the complete account.

History

  • Wielded by Thorn Runehammer during the Korvak War, one of the five champions who fought and survived it.
  • After the war, when the Gift-Bearers agreed that the Gifts were too dangerous for casual mortal use, Thorn removed the Green Gift from circulation himself rather than surrendering it to a guardian.
  • He hid the Green Gift beneath the Temple to Demmazon in Aegea — the place where Demmazon had first revealed himself to the world.
  • Thorn publicly claimed that he had returned the Gift to Demmazon. This was a deliberate deception intended to protect the Gift by convincing others that it was no longer in mortal hands.
  • Aegea was later destroyed and sunk beneath the ocean when the two realms split apart at the Fall of the Age of Wonders, burying the hidden Gift along with the city.
  • The Gift remained hidden beneath Aegea until the events of Under the Bus.
  • Recovering it required Kelestaria to sacrifice her life to break through its final magical protections.
  • At the campaign's climax, Thorn used the recovered Gift's power in the struggle against Cain, Filtiarn, and the corrupt leadership of the Church of Demmazon.
  • Thorn and Orinder subsequently used the Gift's power in the effort to destroy the spiritual barrier that had prevented the dead from properly passing beyond the world.
  • Orinder redirected part of the Gift's power into Kelestaria's spirit. The resulting fusion created Orin-Kel.
  • The resulting distribution of the Gift's power allowed Thorn and Orin-Kel to ascend to godhood.
  • Thorn's ascension occurred only after the three opposing factions had been defeated, including Filtiarn. Thorn had not yet ascended when he imprisoned Filtiarn.
