Adventure Machine
Adventure Machine
The Adventure Machine is an Age of Wonders apparatus designed to allow people to experience the contents of certain enchanted books as immersive, virtual adventures. It was primarily created as a novelty and form of entertainment for scholars.
The machine can accommodate up to eight individuals at once. Participants enter the apparatus and an appropriate tome is placed into its control panel. The machine then uses the book's enchantment to create an experiential representation of its contents, allowing the participants to learn through an adventure rather than simply reading the book.
The machine was discovered in the ruined, underwater remains of Aegea, in the same library where the party found The Quest for the Cure. The book had been badly damaged by water and was largely illegible, leaving the party unable to determine exactly what information remained intact.
Smah Tepants, Tim, Dugan Lifebrew, and Demetrius worked together for several days to repair the Adventure Machine. They succeeded in getting it operational, but the repairs could not restore all of its original safety features.
Under normal circumstances, the machine's experiences were primarily illusion-based and presumably intended to be harmless. After the damage and repairs, however, the ability to keep the illusions harmless had been irrevocably compromised. As a result, the adventure could contain genuine danger.
The repaired machine also prevented the participants from bringing their own equipment into the experience. Demetrius believed the adventure itself would provide whatever equipment the participants required, although he was not certain.
The party ultimately used the machine with The Quest for the Cure. The experience transported them into an immersive recreation of the history contained in the tome, beginning with the founding of Aegea and eventually taking them through the events surrounding the plague that devastated the city and the creation of The Aegisstaff.
Known Limitations
- Maximum of eight participants at once.
- Requires an appropriate enchanted tome to operate.
- Damage to the tome can result in incomplete or corrupted information.
- The machine's damaged safety systems can allow real danger during an experience.
- Participants cannot bring their own equipment into the experience.
- The machine was repaired rather than restored to its original condition, so its exact capabilities after the repairs are uncertain.
Significance
The Adventure Machine provides an unusual surviving example of the magical technology of the Age of Wonders. Unlike ordinary books that simply preserve information, its associated apparatus was capable of transforming historical or educational material into an interactive experience.
