The Quest for the Cure

The Quest for the Cure is a unique magical history tome concerning the founding of Aegea and the plague that nearly destroyed the city in its earliest days. The book was kept in the library of Aegea and was frequently referenced in historical accounts of the plague.

The book was eventually recovered by the party from the flooded ruins of Aegea. Although the tome had survived long enough to retain its magical properties, extensive water damage had left it largely illegible. Because of this, the party could not simply read the book and instead used the Adventure Machine to experience its contents.

The History of Aegea

The experience begins at the founding of Aegea, presenting it as an unprecedented attempt to bring humans, elves, dwarves, and gnomes together in a single settlement. The city was intended to become a great center of cooperation between the races, although coexistence was not always easy.

The young settlement was soon threatened by a series of disasters. The normally fertile Aegean valley suffered unusual droughts, leading to famine. Wolves began terrorizing farmers and traders on the outskirts of the city. Then a terrible plague struck.

The plague initially appeared to be an illness, but its true nature was eventually revealed: those afflicted could transform into werewolves. The plague was therefore more than a disease; it was a curse.

The leaders of Aegea sought a way to stop it. Their mystics believed that a magical crystal known as the Hag's Eye, possessed by a coven of witches living far to the north, might reveal the means of defeating the plague.

The Hag's Eye

Within the Adventure Machine's experience, the party was placed into the role of heroes chosen by Mageris and sent to retrieve the Hag's Eye.

They traveled north to Sky Lake, where three hags possessed the crystal. After defeating the hags and recovering the gem, the experience shifted to show Aegea's mystics using the Hag's Eye to seek a solution to the city's problems.

The vision revealed that the greatest among the people of Aegea would create an item of immense power. This artifact would protect the people from the plague while also protecting the valley from drought and flooding, ending the famine and other hardships threatening the city.

The artifact was to be a great collaboration between the races of Aegea.

The Unicorn

The mystics determined that the artifact required powerful components capable of containing the magic that would be placed within it. Mageris therefore sent the heroes into the Great Forest to find a unicorn.

They were instructed to obtain both the unicorn's blood and its horn, but with an apparently impossible requirement: the unicorn could not die. The blood would lose its potency if the unicorn died, while removing its horn would ordinarily kill it.

The experience required the party to demonstrate that they were worthy of the unicorn's trust. The party encountered various fey inhabitants of the forest before eventually reaching a unicorn's glade.

The unicorn ultimately provided the necessary components, allowing the heroes to return to Aegea.

The Aegisstaff

The final portion of the experience showed Aegea's mystics and craftsmen completing the artifact. The party could not clearly see every ingredient used because the damaged book caused portions of the experience to be incomplete. The only additional component they were able to identify was a phoenix feather.

The completed artifact was The Aegisstaff.

The experience presented the Aegisstaff as the answer to Aegea's crisis: an artifact capable of protecting the city and its valley from the plague and the environmental hardships that had accompanied it.

This experience was the source of the party's later understanding that the Aegisstaff possessed the power to cure or prevent the plague.

Damage to the Experience

The physical damage to the book, combined with the incomplete repairs to the Adventure Machine, affected the experience.

After the scene showing Mageris raising the completed Aegisstaff, the party found themselves floating in darkness. Nothing happened for some time, and they suspected that the damaged book had reached a portion of the text it could no longer reproduce.

Eventually, the experience abruptly changed. The party found themselves in a small room and were confronted by an Aspect of Filtiarn, who accused them of attempting to learn how to defeat him and attacked them.

The party had no equipment with them, consistent with the limitations of the repaired Adventure Machine. They were nevertheless able to damage the Aspect despite its apparent defenses. The encounter was interrupted when Demetrius managed to communicate with them from outside the experience.

This final encounter appears to have been a consequence of the damaged book and/or Adventure Machine rather than part of the historical account contained in the original tome. The surviving evidence does not establish exactly how much of the original book was lost or corrupted.

Significance

The Quest for the Cure is one of the party's most important surviving sources of information about ancient Aegea. It established a historical connection between the ancient Aegean plague and the later plague afflicting the party's world.

More importantly, it provided the first significant evidence that The Aegisstaff was created specifically to combat the ancient plague and that the staff's powers extended beyond disease prevention to preserving the land and its crops.

The party's later research therefore led them to conclude that finding the original Aegisstaff might provide the means to combat the modern plague.
