Orin-Kel

A single god formed from the fusion of two beings — Orinder and Kelestaria — at the moment the barrier separating the living world from the spiritual energy of the dead was destroyed.

Overview

Orin-Kel is a greater deity formed from the fusion of Orinder and Kelestaria at the conclusion of the Under the Bus campaign.

The creation of Orin-Kel fulfills an ending established in the original 2008 Campaign Outline, which stated:

"Raising of the gods - Orinder & Kelestaria combine to form Orin-Kel."

The circumstances of the actual campaign ending closely matched this planned outcome.

Orin-Kel ascended at the same time as Thorn Runehammer (God), following the destruction of the supernatural barrier that had trapped spiritual energy and disrupted the passage of souls.

Origin

Orin-Kel's existence resulted from the convergence of two very different beings.

Orinder was a Chosen figure possessing a unique ability to Raise Dead. After the Age of Wonders, Raise Dead and Resurrection no longer functioned normally for most people. Orinder was an exception: his Raise Dead ability could successfully restore both the body and soul of the deceased.

Kelestaria, believed by most of the party to be an elven druid, was secretly a unicorn. Her true nature was discovered during the campaign but deliberately kept secret by one member of the party.

At the campaign's climax, Kelestaria sacrificed herself in order to break through the final magical protections surrounding Thorn's hidden Green Gift.

Orinder was unable to restore Kelestaria after her death.

The revelation of Kelestaria's true nature at the moment of her death established that she was not an elf, but a unicorn.

Formation of Orin-Kel

After the Green Gift had been recovered, Thorn attempted to use its power to destroy the barrier that was trapping spiritual energy.

Thorn divided the Gift's power between himself and Orinder, intending for Orinder's unique Raise Dead ability to serve as a conduit through which the barrier could be broken.

Orinder redirected part of the power toward Kelestaria's spirit.

The resulting fusion of Orinder and Kelestaria created a single new being: Orin-Kel.

The barrier was nevertheless destroyed.

With the barrier broken, the obstruction preventing souls from passing normally between life and death was removed. Orin-Kel and Thorn both ascended to godhood as part of the same climactic event.

Ascension

Orin-Kel's ascension occurred at the end of the campaign during the destruction of the spiritual barrier.

The sequence was:

  1. The party recovered Thorn's hidden Green Gift of Transmutation.

  2. Thorn used the Gift's power in an attempt to destroy the barrier trapping spiritual energy.

  3. Thorn divided the Gift's power between himself and Orinder.

  4. Orinder redirected part of his share toward Kelestaria's spirit.

  5. Orinder and Kelestaria fused into Orin-Kel.

  6. The barrier was destroyed.

  7. Orin-Kel and Thorn ascended to godhood.

The resulting deity is a single entity rather than two separate gods.

Divine Identity

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Domains: Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Animal, Plant

Favored weapon: Scythe

Symbol: The head of a unicorn

Orin-Kel's six established domains encompass the natural elements and the living world.

The campaign material does not establish a definitive explanation for why these particular domains were assigned to Orin-Kel. They should therefore be treated as the established divine portfolio without assuming that each domain derives from one specific component of the fused entity.

The Barrier

The destruction of the barrier was the central event surrounding Orin-Kel's creation.

The barrier was a consequence of Demmazon's original separation of the two realms. It trapped spiritual energy and prevented souls from passing normally beyond the mortal world.

This disruption ultimately manifested in the failure of Raise Dead and Resurrection for ordinary mortals and contributed to the larger spiritual crisis occurring during the campaign.

Orinder's unique Raise Dead ability was instrumental in the attempt to destroy the barrier.

The barrier was successfully destroyed during the same event in which Orin-Kel was formed and Thorn ascended.

Kelestaria's Sacrifice

Before Orin-Kel existed, Kelestaria sacrificed herself to allow the party to reach Thorn's hidden Green Gift.

Her death was therefore directly responsible for the circumstances that eventually produced Orin-Kel.

Orinder attempted to restore her but could not.

Later, when Thorn divided the Green Gift's power between himself and Orinder, Orinder redirected part of that power into Kelestaria's spirit.

That act resulted in their fusion and the creation of Orin-Kel.

Kelestaria's identity as a unicorn was revealed at the time of her death.

Relationship with Thorn

Orin-Kel's creation was directly intertwined with Thorn Runehammer's final use of the Green Gift.

Thorn divided the Gift's power between himself and Orinder in an attempt to use Orinder's unique Raise Dead ability to destroy the spiritual barrier.

Orinder redirected part of that power into Kelestaria instead, resulting in Orin-Kel.

Thorn and Orin-Kel subsequently ascended together when the barrier was destroyed.

Prophecy

The prophecies of Pythia the Mad Prophet contain a passage concerning a "new harmony" that rises or ascends.

This prophecy is associated with the circumstances of Orin-Kel's creation and ascension.

The precise interpretation of the prophecy should remain separate from the established facts of the event.

Open Questions

The following remain deliberately unresolved:

Kelestaria's Original Purpose

No surviving source currently explains why a unicorn was traveling in disguise as an elf alongside Thorn and the adventuring party.

This circumstance emerged during actual play and was never given a definitive explanation.

No explanation should be added to the campaign canon without supporting source material or an explicit authorial decision.

The Party Member Who Knew

One party member discovered Kelestaria's true nature before her death and deliberately kept the secret.

The available material does not establish that this knowledge ultimately affected the events leading to Orin-Kel's creation.

The significance of that secret therefore remains unresolved.
