Magerris
Magerris
Overview
Magerris of the Staves was one of the most important mortal figures of the Age of Wonders and later became a god. Before his ascension, he was the Keeper of the Aegisstaff, the most powerful artifact ever created by mortals themselves.
Magerris served on the High Council of Aegea alongside Correries. Although he initially declined Demmazon's offer of a Gift and the leadership of the original Gift-Bearers, he ultimately became one of the principal figures opposing Correries and was himself raised to godhood during the final struggle against him.
The prophecy of Pythia the Mad Prophet identifies Magerris with the phrase "taming the magic of the uncontrolled."
Mortal Life
Magerris was the Keeper of the Aegisstaff during the Korvak War. When Demmazon offered him a Gift and leadership of the Gift-Bearers, Magerris declined.
At the time, Magerris already possessed the Aegisstaff, had not yet fully embraced Demmazon as the one true god, and considered himself unworthy of the additional responsibility. Instead, he recommended Vestal Stone for leadership of the Gift-Bearers.
Magerris later served on the High Council of Aegea alongside Correries.
The Fall of Aegea
Following Correries' rise and the destruction of Aegea by his armies, Magerris became one of the principal leaders of the resistance against Correries.
After Vestal Stone's death, Magerris recovered the White Gift from Vestal's tomb and took up its power.
He subsequently sent the Heroes of Aegea into the mountains to seek the aid of Alantarin the Wise, who was protecting two of the Gifts.
Before the Heroes could reach Alantarin, Zaraleth stole the two Gifts from his temple. The Heroes ultimately recovered the Gifts and returned to the struggle against Correries.
The Gap of Otheron
During the fighting against Correries, Magerris was knocked unconscious while carrying the White Gift.
The wizard Otheron briefly took possession of the Gift. Not knowing how to control its power, Otheron unleashed it against Correries.
Correries survived the attack, and the released power carved a massive trench through the mountains.
This geographical feature became known during the Age of Wonders as the Gap of Otheron, after the wizard whose actions caused its creation.
The name survived through the events of the Under the Bus campaign. Over the following approximately 10,000 years, however, both the name and the legends surrounding the Gap's creation changed. In the modern era it is known as Oath's Gap, and the true history of its creation has been lost.
Ascension
Correries eventually absorbed the power of one of the Gifts into himself, becoming the first mortal to ascend to godhood.
He subsequently divided the power of another Gift between Milaynee and Ulanthar, raising both of them to godhood.
Magerris was therefore confronted by three newly ascended gods:
To even the odds, Magerris used the recovered Yellow Gift to raise his allies Krom and Tarmikos to godhood, dividing its power between them.
This resulted in the divine pair of Krom and Tarmikos joining Magerris against Correries, Milaynee, and Ulanthar.
The Battle of Rictaria
Magerris ultimately fought Correries directly over the city of Rictaria.
The conflict devastated the city and resulted in the creation of the mountain now known as Godsmount.
At some point during this struggle, Magerris absorbed the power of the White Gift into himself, giving him the power necessary to oppose Correries, who had already absorbed the power of his own Gift.
Magerris subsequently became a god himself.
Regret Over Vestal Stone
After the events of the Age of Wonders, Magerris admitted to Thorn Runehammer that he regretted appointing Vestal Stone as leader of the original Gift-Bearers.
His regret was not because Vestal was unworthy, but because he was too worthy.
This reflects Magerris' enduring concern over the consequences of the decision he made when he originally declined Demmazon's offer.
The Separation of the Realms
After the rise of the new gods, Demmazon lured them into his home realm.
Demmazon then separated his realm from the mortal world, imprisoning the newly ascended gods there and preventing them from directly returning to the world.
Magerris remains imprisoned in Demmazon's separated realm.
