Menasta
Menasta
Status: CANON
Type: City / Kingdom
Era: Age of Wonders / Fall of the Age of Wonders
Overview
Menasta was one of the three major human kingdoms of the Age of Wonders, alongside Aegea and Rictaria.
The kingdom was ultimately destroyed during the catastrophic events surrounding the Fall of the Age of Wonders. Its destruction was associated with a prolonged conflict against undead forces and the demons that emerged from the mountain south of the city, now known as Demon's Horn.
The Kingdom of Menasta
Menasta was a major human power before the Fall.
The surviving historical record provides little detail about the kingdom's government, culture, or role during the Age of Wonders. What is clear is that it was significant enough to be remembered alongside Aegea and Rictaria as one of the great kingdoms of the pre-Fall world.
The War Against the Undead
Menasta's destruction was tied to a constant war with undead forces that had become established throughout the surrounding region.
The conflict was not a single battle. The surviving account describes Menasta as being crushed by a constant war with the undead, suggesting a prolonged struggle that steadily overwhelmed the kingdom.
The situation was made worse by the demons associated with the mountain south of the city.
Demons from the Mountain
The mountain south of Menasta became a seemingly endless source of demons.
The mountain was originally known as Demonmount and is now called Demon's Horn. Its origins date to the Korvak War, when Salendaius Moonstrike sealed a Korvak-created rift that had allowed demons to enter the world and created the mountain around the sealed rift.
Many demons had already escaped through the rift before it was sealed, and demons remained associated with the mountain afterward.
The continuing presence of demons around the mountain contributed to the destruction of Menasta.
The Fall
By the time of the Fall, Menasta had been overwhelmed.
The kingdom was ultimately destroyed along with the other great kingdoms of the old world. Unlike Rictaria, whose destruction can be directly tied to the battle between Magerris and Correries, the surviving records do not identify a single event that destroyed Menasta.
Instead, the available history describes the kingdom as having been crushed by the continuing war against undead and the seemingly endless demonic threat from the mountain.
Menasta as a Necropolis
Menasta did not remain free of undead influence after its destruction.
During Under the Bus, Cain's armies conquered Menasta. The city became a necropolis, serving as an undead haven where Cain's power continued to grow.
The party learned of Menasta's fall while confronting one of Cain's undead servants. The creature boasted that Cain's armies had conquered the city and threatened to place the petrified bodies of two of the party's clerics on either side of the gateway into the city.
This makes Menasta one of the locations directly associated with Cain's expanding undead power during the later Under the Bus campaign.
Historical Significance
Menasta represents one of the major human civilizations lost during the Fall of the Age of Wonders.
Unlike Aegea, whose ruins were eventually submerged, and Rictaria, which was buried beneath Godsmount, Menasta continued to exist as a recognizable city after its original kingdom was destroyed. Its later occupation by Cain's forces transformed the remains of the city into an undead stronghold.
The surviving record does not currently provide enough information to reconstruct Menasta's earlier history in comparable detail to Aegea.
