Rictaria

Status: CANON
Type: City / Kingdom
Era: Age of Wonders

Overview

Rictaria was one of the major kingdoms of the Age of Wonders.

The kingdom was ultimately destroyed during the conflict between Magerris and Correries. The battle took place in the skies above Rictaria, and the destruction that followed completely obliterated the city and kingdom.

The destruction of Rictaria also created Godsmount, permanently transforming the landscape where the kingdom had once stood.

The Destruction of Rictaria

The final recorded history of The Aegisstaff places it in the skies above Rictaria, where Magerris wielded it during his battle with Correries.

The battle completely destroyed Rictaria. As the conflict progressed, a massive mountain rose directly beneath the city, destroying what remained of the kingdom and creating what would become known as Godsmount.

Correries eventually fled the battle toward the End of the World, with Magerris pursuing him.

The destruction of Rictaria was therefore not simply the result of a conventional attack. The conflict between the two powerful beings transformed the land itself and left the former kingdom buried beneath and around the newly created mountain.

The Ruins

Although Rictaria itself was destroyed, portions of the ancient city survived beneath Godsmount.

Thousands of years later, during Under the Bus, explorers searching Godsmount encountered extensive ruins believed to be remnants of ancient Rictaria. Among the discoveries were a vast cemetery, additional ruins, and a large Age of Wonders-era palace or mansion.

The ruins provide some of the few surviving physical evidence of the kingdom that once occupied the region.

The detailed exploration of these ruins belongs primarily to Godsmount rather than this entry.

Cain and the Ruins

Much later, Cain established a stronghold within the ruins beneath Godsmount.

The Under the Bus party eventually discovered Cain's repaired manor while searching the mountain. Cain and his undead forces had occupied the area, using the ancient ruins as the setting for their activities.

Cain's presence was therefore a later occupation of the ruins, not part of the original destruction of Rictaria.

Historical Significance

Rictaria's destruction marks one of the great physical catastrophes associated with the final conflicts of the Age of Wonders.

The battle that destroyed the kingdom also created Godsmount, making the two locations inseparable in later history: Rictaria was the kingdom that once occupied the region, while Godsmount is the mountain that remained after its destruction.

The location also became important in the later search for The Aegisstaff, because Magerris was last known to have possessed the artifact during his battle with Correries above Rictaria.

Rictaria and Riatin

Rictaria should not be confused with Riatin.

Rictaria was a city and kingdom destroyed during the Age of Wonders.

Riatin was a person who became the first lich and was associated with the history of Cain.
