Demon's Horn
Demon's Horn
Overview
Demon's Horn is a massive volcanic mountain created during the Korvak War by Salendaius Moonstrike. It was built around a rift created by the Korvaks that was allowing demons to flood into the world. Salendaius sealed the rift and raised the mountain around it, both concealing the rift and preventing it from being reopened.
The mountain became known as Demonmount because a number of demons had already escaped through the rift before Salendaius succeeded in sealing it. Those demons remained on the mountain after the war, giving the place a lasting reputation as a home of demons.
The mountain was dramatically altered during the separation of Demmazon's realm. The geographical upheaval that accompanied the separation reshaped the mountain until its new form resembled a gigantic horn. It was subsequently known as Demon's Horn, a name that preserved its ancient association with demons while reflecting its new appearance.
The Korvak War
The Korvaks created a rift that allowed demons to enter the world in large numbers. Salendaius Moonstrike eventually succeeded in sealing the rift.
To ensure that the rift could not simply be reopened, Salendaius created the mountain around it. The mountain concealed the sealed rift and served as a massive physical barrier protecting the world from whatever lay beyond it.
Salendaius was unable to prevent every demon from reaching the world before the rift was closed. Those that escaped remained upon the newly created mountain after the war.
The mountain therefore became known as Demonmount.
Demonmount
For much of the Age of Wonders, Demonmount remained associated with the demons that had escaped during the Korvak War. Over time, the original purpose of the mountain and the existence of the sealed rift became increasingly obscure, while the mountain's reputation as a place inhabited by demons endured.
The mountain itself was a lasting reminder of the Korvak War and of Salendaius's efforts to contain the threat created by the Korvaks.
The Separation
The separation of Demmazon's realm from the planet brought massive geographical changes to the world. Mountains collapsed, new mountains rose, and the oceans shifted dramatically.
Demonmount was reshaped during this upheaval. Its new form resembled a gigantic horn, and the mountain became known as Demon's Horn.
The name change therefore reflected both its history and its altered appearance: the "Demon's" portion recalled the demons that had once occupied the mountain, while the "Horn" described the form the mountain took after the Separation.
After the Fall
Following the Fall of the Age of Wonders, Demon's Horn remained a dangerous and isolated region. The surrounding lands suffered greatly, including the destruction of the nearby kingdom of Menasta, which was plagued by undead and demons.
By the Under the Bus era, the mountain was still widely associated with demons. Stories of demons living there were common enough that travelers generally avoided the area.
Under the Bus
Demon's Horn existed as a significant landmark during the Under the Bus era, with its history and the demons that remained there dating back to the Korvak War.
The detailed events surrounding the party's encounter with a dragon at the mountain are recorded separately in Dragon Hunt rather than here.
The Sealed Rift
The ultimate fate of the rift sealed by Salendaius Moonstrike is unknown.
It remains unclear whether the rift still exists somewhere within Demon's Horn, what condition it is in, or what might happen if it were ever disturbed.
