Quentin
Quentin
Overview
Quentin was one of the original nine Founders of the Chosen and, by the later stages of the campaign, the organization's last surviving Founder.
He was one of the principal leaders of The Chosen and headed its political division, which worked to influence the governments and leadership of towns, cities, and nations.
Founder and Leader
Quentin was one of the nine people who founded the Chosen roughly fifty years before the beginning of the campaign. The original Founders were Jessenth (Uncle Jesse), Angar, Stegner, Serianne, Samos, The Traveler, Effron, Eritrea, and Quentin.
At the beginning of the campaign, Quentin was one of three surviving Founders still leading the organization, alongside Effron and Eritrea. After Effron's death, he became the last Founder remaining at the Tower of Plinth.
Political Division
Quentin was responsible for the Chosen's political division. Its purpose was to become involved with the leadership and governing of communities wherever the Chosen could establish influence, with the intention of steering events toward what the Chosen considered the betterment of the world.
This made Quentin one of the principal administrators and strategists within the organization, rather than simply a field operative.
Relationship with the Party
Quentin became an important authority figure for the party after their initial recruitment by Effron. He was repeatedly involved in decisions concerning the party and the Chosen, particularly as the organization's other Founders disappeared or died.
When the party returned to the Tower after their first southern expedition, Quentin was the person they sought out for help. He was already dealing with a serious illness spreading through the Chosen and was visibly haggard from the crisis.
Quentin also worked with the party's discoveries. When they brought the mysterious disk recovered from the wolf temple to the Tower, he consulted Brother Tomlin and the Chosen scholars, helping determine that the writing was an ancient language associated with Pythia the Mad Prophet and that further research would require the resources of the Great Library at Toreon.
He also investigated Orinder's unusual power fluctuations and concluded that his ability to raise the dead was probably one of his Chosen powers. Quentin considered this ability exceptionally important.
Demetrius and the Toreon Mission
Quentin had agents operating outside the Tower, including Demetrius, who had been undercover in Toreon for several years. Demetrius was one of Quentin's agents and had failed to report in for a couple of years, leading the Chosen to potentially believe that he was dead.
After the party became involved with the Church of Demmazon and were imprisoned in Toreon, Demetrius eventually revealed himself and contacted the Chosen for a rescue.
Last Founder
After Eritrea and the crew of the Sunchaser were killed, Quentin became the final surviving Founder. By this point, age had visibly begun to affect him, and he was described as increasingly frail.
Recognizing that the Chosen could no longer rely on the original Founder leadership, Quentin promoted Tim and Marcus to Senior Chosen status, explicitly describing the position as equivalent to that of a Founder despite their not having been among the original founders. He also appointed Tashiro Eastforest as captain of the Sunchaser.
Quentin continued to lead the Chosen during the crisis surrounding the werewolf armies and the defense of the Tower. His concern for the organization's future was particularly apparent in his repeated attempts to persuade Bo Duke and Malachi to rejoin the Chosen when their abilities were desperately needed.
Characterization
Quentin is primarily portrayed as an experienced organizational leader: scholarly, politically minded, pragmatic, and deeply invested in the survival of the Chosen.
Unlike some of the Founders whose roles became increasingly mysterious, Quentin remained a visible part of the organization's day-to-day leadership. His gradual aging also provided a visible reminder that the original generation of Chosen was disappearing and that the organization would eventually have to pass leadership to a new generation.
