Jayme
Jayme
Overview
Jayme was a half-elf explorer and member of the The Chosen's exploratory division. He was responsible for mapping the world after the Fall and attempting to reconnect regions and peoples separated by the changes to the world. He also served as a recruiter for the Chosen and was the first member of the organization the party encountered.
Role in the Campaign
First Encounter
The party first met Jayme in Carlson, where he was being harassed by local ruffians because he was a half-elf. After the party intervened, Jayme hired them as bodyguards while continuing his expedition south. He subsequently revealed that this was partly a pretext: he had been sent to recruit the party for the Chosen and bring them to his master, Effron, at the Tower of Plinth.
Jayme's master was Effron, one of the leaders of the Chosen. Jayme accompanied the party to the Tower and helped operate the lift into the fortress.
Explorer and Mapmaker
Jayme's primary role within the Chosen was exploration and cartography. His maps were particularly valuable because so much of the world had changed since the Fall.
He accompanied the party on several expeditions, although he was explicitly described as being of limited use in combat. His mapmaking skills were considered useful enough that the Chosen repeatedly sent him with the party when exploration was important.
For the expedition to Aegea, Jayme provided old maps of the surrounding region and maps of Aegea itself. The maps were difficult to use because they predated the Fall and because Aegea had been a highly unusual multi-level city. Nevertheless, they helped the expedition locate the ruins and search for the city's library.
Later Expeditions
Jayme accompanied the party and other Chosen aboard the Sunchaser during the expedition toward the End of the World. During the voyage he remained enthusiastic about the exploration, eventually recognizing that their observations did not match the old maps and accounts of the world's edge. His geographic knowledge was instrumental in recognizing that something was wrong with their expected route.
When the expedition ultimately discovered land beyond the expected location of the world's edge, Jayme was among the explorers investigating the newly encountered territory.
Characterization
Jayme is portrayed primarily as an enthusiastic explorer and scholar rather than a combatant. He is particularly interested in discovering places that have been lost or changed since the Fall and in expanding the Chosen's knowledge of the world.
His half-elven heritage also made him subject to discrimination. He specifically avoided accompanying the party to Toreon because he expected his presence as a half-elf to attract unwanted attention.
