Overview

Effron was one of the nine original Founders of the Chosen and, at the beginning of the campaign, one of the three remaining leaders of The Chosen. He was the party's first major contact within the organization and effectively served as their initial mentor.

Effron was Jayme's master and was responsible for bringing the party into the Chosen and introducing them to life at the Tower of Plinth.

Role in the Campaign

The party first met Effron in The Gap, where he was overseeing construction of the Chosen's new headquarters. He tested the party with a game of Battle Chess, although he later revealed that the game was simply something he enjoyed rather than their actual test.

He then had the party select a leader, with Tim (Nate) ultimately volunteering. Effron guided Tim through the process of awakening his first Chosen ability and taught the party how to sense other Chosen.

Afterward, Effron brought the party into the Tower, showed them around, and introduced them to the organization. He formally offered them membership, awarded them their Badge of the Chosen, and administered the ceremony that placed them under the Chosen's secrecy geas.

Effron was therefore the person who effectively brought the party into the Chosen.

Founder and Leader

Effron was one of the original nine Founders of the Chosen. At the beginning of the campaign, the surviving Founders were Effron, Eritrea, and Quentin, who led the organization together.

He was also responsible for overseeing the party's early development. The Chosen normally explained additional information about their powers and procedures before sending a new group on its first mission, and Effron would ordinarily have handled that instruction.

The Party's Leader Connection

When Effron designated Tim as the party's leader, he used one of his Chosen abilities to establish a connection between Tim and the Chosen's scrying pool at the Tower.

This allowed Chosen using the pool to observe Tim and communicate with him, while Tim could communicate back by concentrating on the sensor.

The party was never told about this ability before leaving the Tower. Effron normally explained the connection before a group's first mission, but he died before the party's first mission took place. The party later became upset when they discovered what had happened.

Death

Effron was killed during the werewolf attack on the Tower of Plinth.

The party was initially fighting the attacking wolves in the Tower's courtyard. After the surviving attackers fled down toward the Gap, the party pursued them.

At the lift they found extensive carnage. Dozens of Chosen had been killed, including Effron, whose body was surrounded by dead wolves and humans. The recap notes that he appeared to have put up a considerable fight before being killed.

His death left Quentin as the last surviving Founder still leading the Chosen at the Tower.

Legacy

Effron's death had several immediate consequences:

The party lost the person who had originally recruited and mentored them.
The Chosen lost one of their three remaining Founders.
The connection he had established between Tim and the Tower's scrying pool could not be recreated.
The party's later discovery that Effron had been able to monitor them contributed to their growing distrust of the Chosen's secrecy.

Despite these complications, Effron's role in the party's early history remained fundamentally that of their recruiter, teacher, and first Chosen mentor.
